Our Style Icon: The Virgin Suicides

Now, just because a movie (that was a very good book first) can’t wear a hat, doesn’t mean that it can’t be a style icon.

There is something entrancing about The Virgin Suicides, isn’t there? It’s 1970’s style has a certain je ne sais pas about it - much like another tragically themed (albeit more 60’s) film, Valley Of The Dolls. I know quite a few bloggers have covered this film, but I just couldn’t resist…

First up, I want to talk about the title credits. I used to doodle like this on all of my notebooks.

Insert boy crush name: here.

Oh, doodle-y things, I love you. Especially this linocut heart print by Cursive Arts.

There is also a lot to be said about the cinematography. The city of Grosse Pointe, other wise a normal 70’s American town, looks eerily green and dreamy.

Lomography prints always remind me of this vibe. While they’re moderately hipster-esque, I enjoy seeing an otherwise normal storefront look dreamy and cool. So, if you’re looking to add this vibe to your home/office/stationery, check these Etsy stores out:

Flying Geese by Cassia Beck

Everyone knows that a girl’s room is very important (and personal, according to Bianca Stratford) and Cecilia’s was no exception.

Mad knick knacks, yo!

If you happened to peruse our post on The Fanciest Dust Collectors, you’re already up on your bric-a-brac game. There are definitely running themes of the Virgin Mary and the zodiac around Cecilia’s character. For you New Yorkers, I just discovered Fuego 718 a few weeks ago, which has a pretty rockin’ selection of Virgin Mary/Dia De Los Muertos items. If not, you can always find these items at your local drug or grocery store. I also found Zodiac Gifts which… well… it’s got some weird stuff.

I love her shabby chic furniture, which reminds me of this piece from Laura Ashley. I’ve always found pieces like this at consignment stores or garage sales - sometimes they even have weird stickers on them left over from a previous owner, which gives them a different vibe. The Toorie curtain from Anthropologie would go well with this whole Cecilia room look, too!

Fancy, no?!

Alright, let’s talk clothes. We’re up to our neck in youthful style in this film.

The Lisbon girls relax on the lawn. Everyone always loves Cecilia’s favorite dress.

This prom dress moment is brought to you by Trip Fontaine and peach schnapps.

More prom.

I don’t remember my school uniform looking this cool.

There’s a lot of look that you can build from the movie.

  • I’m reminded of a few pieces from Imitation Of Christ’s 2012 RTW show.
  • Perhaps a more updated version of Cecilia’s dress can be found at Free People
  • I love this printed playsuit from ASOS.
  • This Sparkle And Fade blazer and Urban Renewal vest from Urban Outfitters would spruce up any old uniform, for sure.

Lest we not forget the totally bad-assical soundtrack composed by Air. SO PERFECT. You can stream it on Spotify, or you could just cave and buy it. The album art is way sexy. Speaking of sexy, check out this print

Now lastly, I want to bring up a giggly topic of Lux’s underoo habit.

You know it’s serious when it’s written in Sharpie.

While I wouldn’t recommend writing your man/lady friend’s name on your skivvies, you could always have them embroidered. It’s a more grown up (and moderately less crazy) look.

So, The Virgin Suicides, thanks for being pretty rockin’. We wish we would get postcards from you.
